Russo Stonemasons, Naples

Wandering the backstreets of Chiaia, Naples, we discovered the studio of the Russo brothers. The family of stonemasons have been working in this space for over 70 years. Faded sketches of inlay designs adorn the walls, slabs of marble and blocks of stone are stacked down both sides of the long thin shop, leaving a thin dusty passageway for you to navigate through. At the back of the studio is the workshop, it is here we meet one of the younger Russo brothers. Standing in his white lab coat surrounded by maquettes and drawings he is hand carving a slab of marble to be used as part of a water fountain.  Further up the same street an elderly carpenter is sitting in his modest sun drenched studio, surrounded by half finished chairs and some of the most beautiful Italian terrazzo floors we saw on our travels.
